Types of Cockroaches

There are about 70 different species of cockroaches found in the United States, but fortunately, they don’t all infest homes. There are only four types of cockroaches that frequently enter homes.

  • German Cockroaches: Of the four pest cockroaches, German cockroaches are the most common. They’re light brown to tan in color, and on the backs of their heads, they have two dark stripes. They usually infest kitchens and bathrooms.
  • American Cockroaches: These roaches are large and reddish brown. If you look closely at the backs of their heads, you’ll see a yellowish, figure 8 shape. They’re often found in basements and around pipes.
  • Brownbanded Cockroaches: These roaches are dark brown, and they have two lighter bands on their wings. Since they prefer warm, dry, high locations, they can be found in cabinets or in upstairs rooms.
  • Oriental Cockroaches: Also known as water bugs or black beetle cockroaches, these bugs have smooth, dark bodies. They live in sewers and will crawl up drains to enter homes. Unsurprisingly, they smell terrible!

How to Control Cockroaches

Roaches have three essential requirements, and eliminating access to food, water, and shelter can help control cockroach problems indoors. To avoid feeding roaches, keep your kitchen as clean as possible. After preparing a meal, wipe the counters and sweep the floor. Clean up spills immediately and avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink overnight. To eliminate water sources, repair leaky faucets and pipes, and control humidity in your bathrooms. Clean up clutter, like boxes in your garage, to reduce hiding places for roaches.

To keep more roaches from coming indoors, seal potential entry points. The gaps beneath doors, cracks in foundations, or holes around utility access points are just some of the places where roaches often slip inside. Find and seal as many of these gaps as possible!

Insecticides can be used in addition to non-chemical control. Baiting is an effective method, especially when it’s performed by a trained professional.
